This one is just going to stay home and stay snuggly, but she fully supports your community engagement. And if you need to send out some messages of love and just don’t know where to aim them, she’s ready to accept those telepathic vibrations of affirmation.

This week’s post leans on the weekend side of things. There’s a lot going on around Tacoma this weekend. You might get the feeling that has a lot to do with Valentine’s Day, but you can pretty much opt out of celebrating it and still find lots to do.

Get in on some local history, pick up a craft pack in Old Town, and participate in markets (virtual and pop-up variety!). Pre-pandemic, Tacoma was really getting going with street markets, weekend markets, farmers’ markets, night markets, and we miss those! It’s true shopping online is a very different experience, one that emphasizes (by its absence) the beauty and connection of meeting face to face, on the sidewalk, on a patio, on a closed street, but the makers are still out there making and they could use our support until we can go to markets in person again. This is one chance to see what our local creative makers have been up to lately! See what they’ve made with their own hands, guided by creative vision. Visit La Paloma Marketplace Friday through Saturday to meet local makers, artists, and creators. Maybe even get in on the giveaway!

Included in this La Paloma Marketplace event at 8 pm on Friday night is a Live Art Sale by Petal on Park Ave. Get inspired and discover a local creative person you might not know about already! Maybe you’ll fall in love with a painting or an image of one of your favorite Tacoma views. Petal on the Ave will have some Valentine gift options from their shop at the event too!

Mark your calendar for 2nd Saturdays at Job Carr Cabin Museum! This month’s free craft kit includes everything you’ll need to make an oxen bracelet. Pick up your kit from the front porch of the cabin and please respect social distancing. Craft Saturdays are designed with kids in mind, and you’ll find instructional videos online if you need help with your activity once you get home.

May is the month for a lightsaber battle, for live music and crafts in Old Town Park, for night markets, plant sales at your local high school, hands-on printmaking and paper arts, and locally made short films. It’s the month to learn about the history of Tacoma, and even contribute your own story at events like the Eastside Story Fest. It’s the month to pick-up litter with a bunch of nice people, the month to set out nutritious foods for your mail carrier to share with the food bank, the month to take time to learn more about affordable housing. It’s the month to tune up your bike and join a group ride.
