This coming week marks the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., an inspirational, honorable, and visionary leader in the history of nation. Let's celebrate him together as a community. He's still with us, and we can still learn from him and look to him as a leader. Not only that, there are men and women and children moving forward now on the path he helped break for our country, and we can be part of that.

Over the next several days you can join Tacoma's celebration of Dr. King's life, sacrifice, vision, and example. Take a look at some ideas below.

Tacoma Community House celebrated their 108th birthday this week! That means they've been working for good in the Hilltop community for over a century. If you'd like to help them out, join their MLK Day of Service with a focus on grounds maintenance, cleaning, trash pick-up and more. This is Tacoma's 30th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday celebration. Dr. Dexter Gordon will receive a community service award and Nate Bowling, a teacher at Tacoma's Lincoln High School is the keynote speaker. Our friend Brenda Nelson is also a guest speaker (woot!). This is the University of Puget Sound's 32nd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration. The speech will be given by Dr. Eddie Moore Jr. with a focus on injustice, inequality, and inspiration to move forward. Reception to follow. This month’s list includes a benefit concert with karaoke, a music festival staged on porches across Central Tacoma, block parties and outdoor markets, free berries, a favorite local publication, a neighborhood clean-up, and the chance to support the YWCA while eating hot dogs and nacho cheese.
