Want to go out and really be out—out in the open air, beneath a colorful umbrella, on a shaded patio, beside a bustling sidewalk, seated on a deck overlooking the water, pulled up to a bar counter by the street? We’ve gathered over 60 of Tacoma’s outdoor dining spots by neighborhood to get you started. Take a look at our updated list of restaurants, cafes, and bars with outdoor seating, then get yourself away from the screen, out the door, and into the life of Tacoma’s summer. See you out there!
We’re into hand-me-downs, one-of-a-kind thrift store finds, saving money, and participating in a force for good in our community. Which means we’ve found ourselves over at the Habitat for Humanity Store on STW on many occasions over our years in Tacoma. This month we share about some of the treasures we’ve found, dos and don’ts for donating, and 8 other local spots you should explore if you’re renovating, furnishing, or reimagining part of your Tacoma home.
Tacoma High 5 is our way to nudge you toward what we love about Tacoma. It’s a short list with a commitment to the local—it embraces the season, invites delight, encourages a spirit of exploration and some generosity as well. This month’s list includes Lunar New Year and monkeyshines, a delightfully pink dessert, a beloved shop in a new spot, ways to support immigrants and asylum seekers, and ideas for getting out to experience something new!

In Tacoma’s Old Town, midway up the slope from the shore, stands this 1940s home full of potential for a new era. Views extend across Commencement Bay to Browns Point—with vision, work and renovation investments it could be restored to an ideal North End retreat. Covered by a 2022 roof, with original hardwood floors intact, features include a large lot, fenced side yard, attached garage and a view deck. The partially finished daylight basement offers a ¾ bath, laundry area and a rec room with a sliding door to the patio. Mature dogwoods, rhodies and a magnolia provide privacy and shade. Set 1.5 miles from Proctor markets and just blocks from the Ruston Way Waterfront, Old Town Dock, a sandy beach, schools, cafes, parks, and annual festivals.
It’s good to be home when home means comfort covered by a brand new roof, when it brings together a big, fenced yard and all the room you need for resting, cooking and living. Sunlight fills the picture window in the living room with a wood burning fireplace and the primary suite offers privacy with its own ¾ bath. Open the sliding door from the eat-in kitchen for coffee and a snack on the deck. Set up an office and enjoy the downstairs living room and ½ bath. Spring 2025 updates include a freshly painted interior, new flooring in the kitchen and in 2 baths, plus a new tub surround. Complete with a 2-car garage, tool shed, spring rhodies, summer plums and evergreens all year. Reach South Hill groceries, shops and schools in just 5 minutes.
Remarkably well-tended and extensively updated, this mid-century home is like a treehouse in a park of blooming rhodies and sculptural pine. The picture window in the fireside living room frames Mt Rainier and sliding doors open to the wraparound deck. Improvements since 2022 are too many to list, but notable ones include a new roof, skylights and windows, solar power, a full kitchen renovation, refinished hardwoods and bathroom updates. Settle into the main floor primary suite with a private ¾ bath and slider to the deck. Head to the daylight basement with its big living space, ½ bath and laundry. Spend afternoons on the patio in the fenced back yard. Visit Chambers Bay and nearby Fircrest, then park in the 2-car garage when you get home.
